Jeanne Gaigher (b.1990) lives and works in Cape Town, South Africa. Gaigher’s artistic practice is characterized by a deep engagement with texture, layers, and the interplay between abstraction and figuration. Gaigher’s work includes a mixture of fabrics, gauze, painting and drawing and is constructed in a very sculptural, architectural way but takes on an anatomical feeling. To create these sculptural paintings, Gaigher starts with the background and then adds fabric elements that enhance or conceal the imagery. In most of her work the female body serves as protagonist, aiming to show the tension between the human body and the context surrounding it and bringing up situations of transitions and metamorphosis.
